Employment Disputes Rise Due to Increasing Workplace Stress

Last years’ economic downturn has affected workers so much so that workplace tension has increased significantly, reports Acas, an employment relations service.

Calls related to losing a job or unfair dismissal have been rampant over the last year and to meet the expectations of the callers, Acas has had to stretch its timings to cover evenings as well as Saturday mornings. There has been a 100% increase in the number of calls seeking remedy for redundancy on the Acas helpline.

According to the annual report released by Acas, the Employment Tribunal Service has sent in around 78,000 reconciliation cases to them, which shows an 18 per cent increase from last year. Even the number of unfair dismissal cases that have been registered with Acas have been 22 per cent more than last year. The occurrence of such cases had gone down during the last two years but has risen by almost 12,000 this year.

Many employment related cases have come up after the recession with workplace stress rising and there have been many unemployed persons trying to gain assistance from Acas’ helpline.

Acas Chairperson, Ed Sweeney said that all these figures show that there has been a lot of tension and stress that workers are having to go through, while the employers are under pressure as well.
