When you purchase a new printer you obtain a certain amount of free ink included in the price.. People don t realise that even though the printer is low-cost the ink cartridges are very overpriced. This unusual position is the consequence of the acceptance of the Gillette business model. The razor manufacturer has been selling low cost handles and premium cost blades for over a hundred years, and now has a superior position in the market place. As a result of the high costs, compatible inks are catching on.

Compatible inks are a real threat to the profitability of printer manufacturers, so cartridges are frequently engineered to be as difficult as possible to copy. Lots of the printer cartridges on the market have small data chips. It is usual for printers to refuse to print if the cartridge inside does not contain a chip. There are often patent issues associated with the electronic chips. This makes it hard for manufacturers of compatible cartridges. Not all compatible cartridges are fully compatible with the whole range of printers. Always check that the ink cartridge function with your printer model.

There are a wide variety of compatible ink makers. Some copy cartridges produce prints that look virtually identical to the original ink cartridges. With others there are sizeable quality problems. Look for indications of quality before buying. If the compatible comes from a well known store they are unlikely to gamble their reputation on low quality wares. If you use a lot of ink, switching to compatibles can save you a small fortune. Just as there are great price differences between compatible and original ink cartridges there are also large price differences between compatible makes.

There are scores of places you need to look to find hot deals. Supermarkets often have good deals on compatible inks as do price comparison sites. This can be a good means to find the best discounts and deals.
